SDLP: Patsy McGlone not contesting next Assembly election
An MLA since 2003, Patsy McGlone will retire at the end of this Assembly mandate. He is the SDLP’s longest-serving politician in the Assembly, and has been described as a ‘stalwart’.
The 2027 Assembly Election is scheduled for Thursday 7 May 2027. Local council elections will take place on the same day.

Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) will field two North Antrim candidates in the Assembly election next year. The party say they hope to elect both Timothy Gaston and Kirk Wilson.

The local Ulster Unionist Party association in Upper Bann is now expected to reselect Doug Beattie to stand in next year’s Assembly election. It comes after the party HQ asked the association to ‘revisit’ its decision.

Doug Beattie will not be selected as the Ulster Unionist Party’s Upper Bann candidate in the next election. The BBC are reporting that he will stand either as an independent or for another party.

Alliance MLA for Strangford, Kellie Armstrong, will retire from politics next year after first being elected to Stormont in 2016. She is the first Alliance MLA to announce they will not be standing in 2027.

Sinn Fein MLA for West Tyrone, Maolisa McHugh, has announced that he will not be standing for re-election in 2027. He has been in Stormont since 2019 when he was co-opted by Sinn Fein.

Pádraig Delargy will not stand for re-election next year, he announced on Friday. The Sinn Féin MLA for Foyle was first co-opted in 2021 and subsequently re-elected in 2022. He is moving away from the constituency.
