The current deputy chief constable, Mark Hamilton, has been out of office after undergoing medical treatment in September.
The Policing Board has confirmed the appointment of the new Chief Constable following approval by the Secretary of State.
The former Chief Constable of Bedfordshire Police, and the lead investigator for Operation Kenova, has been chosen by the Policing Board as the interm Chief Constable for the PSNI.
The suspicious items, wrapped in pride flags, were left at the home of Alliance councillor Peter McCully.
