Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced today that the next general election will be held on 4 July. Rumours have been circulating all day about the possibility of a summer election, and it’s now been confirmed by Rishi Sunak outside Downing Street.
The Alliance Party has selected Sian Mulholland MLA as their candidate for North Antrim in the upcoming general election; a seat currently held by the Democratic Unionist Party with a 12k majority.
Following the resignation of Ross McMullan from Belfast City Council, Alliance has selected Hedley Abernethy as their new Ormiston councillor.
The Alliance Party has selected Alderman Richard Stewart to contest the general election in East Londonderry; The seat is currently held by the Democratic Unionist Party’s Gregory Campbell.
Ross McMullan has stepped down as Alliance councillor for Ormiston on Belfast City Council saying that “the right decision is to give way to allow someone new to take on this amazing role”.
Councillor on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Andrew McMurray, is selected by the Alliance Party to replace Patrick Brown, who resigned from Stormont last week.
Michelle Guy was first elected as a councillor for Castlereagh South in 2019, and has now been selected by local party members to contest the upcoming Westminster election in Strangford.
Patrick Brown served as a councillor for eight years and was first elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2022 but has tonight resigned ‘due to personal reasons’, the Alliance Party has said.
With Labour expected to come into power later this year, their Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn has been meeting with ministers and parties at Stormont.
