The Alliance Party have selected Helena Young to replace Andrew McMurray after he was co-opted to the Northern Ireland Assembly following the resignation of Patrick Brown last month.

The Alliance Party has announced that Helena Young is their new councillor for Slieve Croob on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Ms Young was selected following Andrew McMurray’s co-option to the Northern Ireland Assembly due to Patrick Brown resigning last month.

She has run for election twice before; in the 2019 and 2023 local elections, missing out on a seat both times.

“I am delighted and honoured to be selected as the new councillor for Slieve Croob. I would like to thank Andrew for his work in this role and extend my best wishes as he takes on the new position of South Down MLA.

“My experience working with many community and voluntary groups, as well as being a parent and grandparent, has inspired me to use this opportunity to build an inclusive community that is a supportive space for families.

“I am really looking forward to getting started in my new role as councillor and representing my local area. Joining the Newry, Mourne and Down Council team, my priority will be to assist local residents and ensure the council is actively engaging with local issues, while continuing to build on the work and success of my colleague, Andrew McMurray.”
