Ulster Unionist Party councillor Darryl Wilson has announced his resignation from the party, following a selection row after the general election earlier this year.
The Ballymoney councillor has said he will remain on Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council as an independent for the remainder of his term.
In a statement, he said: “After 12 years of dedication to the Ulster Unionist Party, I have made the decision to resign my membership. This choice follows much reflection, particularly after a challenging yet enlightening year in 2024.”
“While I am considering various paths for the future, one thing remains certain: I will continue to work tirelessly for my constituents. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across the political spectrum to serve the people we represent,” he added.
Following the general election in July, Wilson expressed his disappointment when the local party association in North Antrim chose Colin Crawford to replace Robin Swann at Stormont.
Doug Beattie was the Ulster Unionist Party leader at the time, and he resigned in August due to “irreconcilable differences” with the party officers. He supported Wilson’s bid to be co-opted as the new MLA for North Antrim.
An Ulster Unionist Party spokesperson said: “The Ulster Unionist Party want to thank Councillor Darryl Wilson for his contributions over recent years, both within Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council and his wider political activity for the party.”
“While we are disappointed in his decision, we wish him well and know he will continue to be an excellent representative for the people of Causeway Coast and Glens,” they added.
