The Assembly Commission has nominated Stephen Wright, another former police officer, to be the new Assembly Commissioner for Standards.
He replaces Mark McEwan, formerly a PSNI assistant chief constable, who quit the standards watchdog role after less than a week to take up a deputy chief constable role at Surrey Police.
Wright has over 30 years of service in the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), including as head of their anti-corruption unit and professional standards. He was also a senior investigating officer for serious and organised crime.
“I’m pleased to confirm the Assembly Commission has selected Stephen Wright for nomination to the Assembly as the new Assembly Commissioner for Standards.
“The Assembly Commissioner for Standards serves as an independent officer dedicated to accountability within the Assembly. The Commissioner plays a vital role in maintaining public confidence and ensuring elected representatives and the Assembly adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct. This involves receiving and investigating complaints regarding a potential breach of the MLA Code of Conduct or the Ministerial Code of Conduct.
“The Assembly Commission is confident that Stephen Wright’s significant experience makes him well placed to fulfil this role and will be asking the Assembly to support his appointment.”
– Edwin Poots MLA, Speaker
His appointment is subject to ratification by MLAs next week.
