Register to Vote

To register to vote in elections in Northern Ireland, you must be aged 16 or over, and one of the following must apply to you:

  • You are a British citizen
  • You are an Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
  • You are a Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission
  • You are a citizen of another country living in Scotland or Wales who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission
You cannot vote until you are 18 years old, but you can register from 16 onwards.

When voting at a polling station, you must bring a form of photographic identification with you:

  • A UK, Irish or EEA driving licence (photographic part) (provisional accepted)
  • A UK, Irish or EU passport (including the Irish Passport Card) (EU passports are not accepted at UK Parliamentary elections)
  • An Electoral Identity Card
  • A Translink Half Fare SmartPass
  • A Translink Senior SmartPass
  • A Translink 60+ SmartPass
  • A Translink War Disablement SmartPass
  • A Translink Registered Blind SmartPass
  • A Biometric Immigration Document

The ID does not need to be current, but the photograph must be of a good enough likeness to allow polling station staff to confirm your identity.

If you have no ID to use, you can apply for an Electoral Identity Card from the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland. The deadline is midnight on 26 June 2024.
