Sinn Féin has announced the co-option of Niall Lawlor as a councillor for The Mournes DEA (District Electoral Area) on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

He replaces Leanne McEvoy, who is stepping down from the council for personal reasons. Lawlor said he has “worked closely with Leanne over many years and know the great work she has done for the people of Bryansford, Kilcoo and the wider area. I am determined to continue that work.”

“I am proud and honoured to have been selected for co-option to Newry Mourne and Down District Council to replace Leeanne McEvoy, who is stepping down for personal reasons,” he added.

“I moved to the Mournes because I fell in love with the area, and now as a first-time father, I am committed to working hard to deliver for workers, families and communities across the Mournes.”

Both the MLA and MP for South Down have congratulated Lawlor on his appointment.

Chris Hazzard MP said: “Niall is already deeply invested in the Mournes community and brings with him years of experience supporting constituents on the most crucial issues. As part of a strong Sinn Féin team across South Down, Niall will work hard to deliver for workers, families and communities.”

MLA Cathy Mason added: “Niall will be a fantastic representative for this area. Along with all our team of Sinn Féin representatives, we will work together to deliver on the issues that matter to our families, workers and communities.”
