Sinn Féin: Liz McGowan co-opted to Derry City Waterside seat

Councillor Liz McGowan

Sinn Féin has selected Elizabeth McGowan to replace Caitlin Deeney as a councillor for the Waterside DEA on Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Deeney announced last week that she is stepping down from the council due to ‘personal reasons’.

Liz McGowan said: “I am proud and honoured to have been selected for co-option for the Waterside on Derry City & Strabane District Council to replace Caitlin Deeney, who has stepped down for personal reasons.”

“I would like to thank and pay tribute to Caitlin for the great work she has done for the people of the Waterside area and I wish her well,” she added.

Sinn Féin say McGowan is from the Waterside area, and is a “lifelong republican with a strong background in the education sector.”

She continued: “Our city’s resilience, warmth and sense of identity has shaped who I am. Our people continue to inspire me and I look forward to hearing from people and working to support them in the issues that matter to them.”

“As a Waterside woman, I have a real passion for this community and the people who live in this area and across the wider city and district.”

“I look forward to working with council colleagues to make a real difference and benefit everyone across our community.”

Local MLA Ciara Ferguson has said she is “delighted to see Liz selected as the new Waterside DEA councillor.”

“Liz is a lifelong republican and a community activist and has invaluable knowledge and understanding of the issues that matter to our community.”
