Sinn Féin councillor Paul Burke has resigned from his role on Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council.

In a statement, he said: “It’s been a huge privilege to serve the people of Lisburn North as their first ever Sinn Féin councillor.

“I’ve now stepped back due to personal reasons, and I want to thank everyone, including my party, for their support.”

Burke was elected in the 2023 local council elections, becoming the first Sinn Féin councillor elected in the Lisburn North District Electoral Area (DEA).

Replaced by Declan Lynch

On Friday the Chief Electoral Officer gave notice that Declan Lynch had been chosen by Sinn Féin to replace Burke on the council.

Lynch has worked as a policy advisor for Sinn Féin at the Assembly and as a Bank Official at the Bank of Ireland before that.

Paul Burke said he would be “a fantastic representative who will work hard for local workers, families and communities.”.

“I look forward to supporting Declan and the Sinn Féin Lisburn team as we drive forward real and positive change,” he added.
