A former Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) candidate has been selected by the Alliance Party as their new councillor for Bangor West.

Naomi McBurney stood for election to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2022 for the Ulster Unionists in North Down.

At the time, she said: “When I was growing up, unionists always seemed to be men in dark suits but I detect a clear difference in the Ulster Unionist Party of today which I see as offering a positive, hopeful and progressive pro-Union stance.

“The party’s message is that you don’t have to be a certain type of person to be a unionist and the only criteria that matters is believing Northern Ireland is best served as part of the Union. I want constructive politics and am supportive of the Union. The Ulster Unionist Party delivers on both counts.”

She failed to get elected with just 3.2% of the vote, her UUP colleague Alan Chambers however was elected, with 9.2% of first preference votes.

But today Alliance announced that she was chosen at a meeting of party association members to be their new councillor on Ards and North Down Borough Council.

Speaking on her selection by the local association, Naomi McBurney said: “It is an honour to be selected as the Alliance Councillor for Bangor West. Living and growing up in Bangor has made it a place very close to my heart, and I look forward to carrying on the work of Christine and representing the people in Bangor West.

“My background has given me significant insight into issues that are affecting the local community. Politics is about helping others and focusing on everyday issues and that’s what I aim to do in my new position.”

Christine Creighton, who stepped down from her role on the council, said: “Sadly, due to family commitments, I am stepping down from my role as Alliance Councillor. It’s been a privilege to serve the people of Bangor West.

“During my time as Councillor, I have met and engaged with many wonderful residents, volunteers and community groups and have worked hard to promote inclusive, progressive politics. I am confident that Naomi will be an excellent Councillor for Bangor West, and I look forward to supporting her in the future.”
