Alliance councillor Richard Stewart to contest general election in East Londonderry

The Alliance Party has selected Alderman Richard Stewart to contest the general election in East Londonderry; The seat is currently held by the Democratic Unionist Party's Gregory Campbell.

Alliance has selected Alderman Richard Stewart to contest the upcoming general election in East Londonderry.

Stewart was first elected to the Causeway District Electoral Area (DEA) on Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council in the 2019 local elections.

East Londonderry is currently held by the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and has been since 2001 when Gregory Campbell MP was first elected.

In the 2019 general election, the DUP won the seat with a majority of almost 10,000 votes. The SDLP’s Cara Hunter in second place, closely followed by Sinn Fein’s Dermot Nicholl.

Speaking on his selection, Alderman Stewart said, “It really is such an honour and privilege to be selected to represent East Londonderry.”

“East Londonderry has a chance to truly embrace change and elect an MP that will represent them no matter where they live, from Portballintrae to Eglinton and from Kilrea to Claudy.”

No other parties have selected any candidates for East Londonderry as of yet.
