Alex Harbinson is co-opted to Bangor Central seat on Ards & North Down Council

The selection of Alex Harbinson follows the resignation of Karen Douglas in August.

Alex Harbinson has been chosen by the Alliance Party as their new councillor for Bangor Central on Ards and North Down Borough Council.

Mr Harbinson ran in the local council election in May 2023 but failed to get elected.

In a statement released by the Alliance Party today, Mr Harbinson said:

“I’d first like to pay tribute to my friend and colleague Karen Douglas, who has proven time and again to have been a tireless and passionate advocate for the city of Bangor. It’s clear she will be dearly missed, and I wish her every happiness for the future.

“It’s incredibly humbling, but also so exciting, to have been selected to pick up that mantle and represent the people of Bangor Central going forward. I want to make real change in my community, and I’m proud to have been given the opportunity to do so.

“My main areas of focus coming into Council will be revitalising the city centre, promoting and helping develop the growing local arts and cultural scene in Bangor, and enhancing how visitors and residents alike can engage with the area’s natural resources, among many other local issues.

“Bangor Central, as well as the wider Council area, deserves the most efficient and effective local government possible. I’m ready to get to work in helping deliver that, with Alliance’s commitment to creating shared, inclusive, safe and prosperous communities, delivering value for money and openness and transparency at Council, and ensuring the protection of our natural world, at the forefront.”

He replaces Karen Douglas, who resigned from her role on the council in August.
