Defence Secretary Ben Wallace will stand down at next election

Ben Wallace will leave the cabinet at the next reshuffle, and stand down as an MP at the next general election.

The current Secretary of State for Defence, Ben Wallace MP, has said he will stand down at the next UK general election.

He will also leave Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s cabinet at the next reshuffle. This is expected to be held in September.

He has told The Sunday Times in an interview, that he will not stand down early and trigger a by-election.

Wallace’s constituency, Wyre and Preston North, will disappear under upcoming boundary changes and he has said that he will not seek a new one.

This decision comes after the controversy last week when Wallace told a press conference that the UK was not an “Amazon” delivery service for weapons to Ukraine.

He also missed out on a top job at NATO after it was reported that the United States wanted the current chief, Jens Stoltenberg, to remain in post.

Ben Wallace has previously served as the Northern Ireland Minister from 2015 – 2016.
