Lord Peter Weir, former Education Minister, has been appointed to the Board of the Education Authority by the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).
He will replace Mervyn Storey, who was made Chairman of the Board by Education Minister Paul Givan in December 2024.
Lord Weir of Ballyholme had two stints as Minister for Education between 2016 to 2017 and 2020 to 2021.
The EA (Education Authority) Board is made up of 20 members, eight of which are nominated by political parties according to the D’Hondt mechanism.
Lord Weir is a former member of the Northern Ireland Assembly. He has served as Education Minister and previously Chairperson of the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Education Committee. He has declared that during the last five years he has undertaken political activity on behalf of the DUP. He is a member of the House of Lords for which he receives an attendance allowance when participating in proceedings.

The other political representatives on the board are: Stephen Donnelly (Alliance), Miss Rachael Ferguson (Alliance), David Jonathan Craig (DUP), Paul Kavanagh (SF), Frank Charles Maskey (SF), Ms Angie Mervyn (SF), Dr Samuel John Kyle (UUP).
The Education Authority is a non-departmental body sponsored by the Department of Education.
