The Green Party has today announced that its leader in Northern Ireland, Malachai O’Hara, has been nominated as the party’s next Seanad candidate.
The Seanad is the upper house of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament). Members are chosen to join the house using various different methods.
If chosen, Mal O’Hara will replace outgoing Sinn Féin senator Niall Ó Donnghaile, who resigned for health reasons in December 2023.
Mal’s nomination is a proud moment for the Green Party both north and south of the border and strengthens the all-island nature of our party. As a senator, Mal could be a strong voice for all communities across the North as well as the disadvantaged, the LGBT community and, of course, the environment.
– Eamon Ryan, Green Party leader
O’Hara has been the leader of the Green Party in Northern Ireland since August 2022, and was deputy leader from 2019.
In 2019 he was elected as a councillor on Belfast City Council but failed to get re-elected in the 2023 local council elections.
