Grant Shapps is appointed Defence Secretary

Downing street announced the appointment of the new defence secretary today.

Grant Shapps, MP for Welwyn Hatfield, has been appointed as Secretary of State for Defence.

This follows the resignation of Ben Wallace, which he announced in July.

Grant Shapps previously held the energy security and net zero portfolio, which has now been given to Claire Coutinho MP.

This is Shapps’ fifth cabinet position in a year, having been transport secretary, home secretary, business secretary and most recently, energy security and net zero.
